Every one who is serious about playing the guitar knows that there's nothing better than a fine vintage model. There are certain models and periods where the craftsmanship and quality was like nothing available today. Some vintage models have a distinct tone and sound quality that make them well worth the high price. This is why you see your favorite musicians playing those legendary guitars from the 50's-60's decades later.

If you've tried out a lot of instruments at your local music store or pawn shop, you'll know how individual each guitar really is in terms of tone and feel. This holds true even for guitars of the same brand and model, but especially with vintage ones. Not only were more guitars made individually by hand back in the day, but a whole lot of stuff can happen to an instruments wood over the years to affect it's tone. This is why looking for a vintage model can be so rewarding. There's nothing better than finding a guitar with it's own unique sound.

When looking for vintage electrics and acoustics, the most sought after models are pretty well known. This isn't as true for vintage 12 string models. At least it wasn't as well known to me so I just tried out whatever I could find over the years. My first purchase was a vintage 12 string acoustic by Alvarez. To this day it remains one of my favorites. The tone is outstanding and the sound really carries well. It's great for small clubs or just playing for family and friends. The neck is a comfortable width that's easy to play for a 12 string. It has a great feel while picking or strumming. The Alvarez is a great looking instrument too. It has really attractive fret inlays and decorations around the sound hole. The finish was a nice looking blond color.

Another great vintage 12 string guitar is the Rickenbacker 360/12. If you can get your hands on any Rickenbacker from the 60's it's a good investment. It's got that distinctive Rickenbacker body shape and sound hole. It's hard to look at this guitar without automatically thinking George Harrison and the Beatles. It's really great at capturing that classic jangly sound that is prevalent on a lot of Beatles albums too. The important thing is to find a vintage instrument that feels comfortable and sounds great to you.
