Burns 12-string Guitar--It'll Rock Your World

The Burns Double 6 12-string guitar is a marvelous looking instrument. I love the red sunburst version, (it's also available in green). The “broken” pick guard and the huge horns add to the funky look which reminds me so much of ‘60’s rock, back in “my day.” I recently had a chance to play one, and I really loved this guitar. It’s quite heavy, which some players don’t like, but to me it feels nicely solid, and the balance is great.

The Burns Double 6 body is constructed of alder with a classic polyester finish, and has a 21-fret rosewood fingerboard on a hard rock maple neck with 25.5 in. scale. I don’t personally care for the bolted-on neck, but it makes no difference to the quality of the instrument. It has a classic Burns designed headstock with chrome tuners, and those wonderful Burns Tri-Sonics, used to such great effect by Brian Mays of the Beach Boys. There are three of them, in chrome also, as well as a five way pickup switch and a push/pull pickup selector for creating other pick-up combinations. A master volume control and two tone controls round out the fittings.

The fingerboard is wider than some other 12 strings, but I play a lot of classical acoustic, and like the wider board. It gives great ease of fingering, which is facilitated by the 50mm nut which allows ample room for the strings to be separated, and allows the player to easily articulate single note lines. The strings are threaded through a chrome Gotoh bridge, which I've heard is an improvement on the original ‘60’s bar bridges.

If you’re not familiar with the Burns Double 6 tuning, let me explain. The four lower strings (E, A, D, and G) are coupled with a second string which is tuned one octave higher, while the two higher strings, (B and high E) are paired with a second string tuned to the same pitch. The higher octave string is on top, like an acoustic 12-string. The sound is reminiscent of some of the sixties British bands, and is very bright, yet rich and smooth.

Over all, I found this guitar to be an excellent instrument--exceptional quality, superb sound, and very user-friendly. I would recommend looking on e-bay if you are interested in owning one; I’m sure you could find one at a great price.
