History of the Twelve String Guitar

The origin of the twelve string guitar is shrouded in mystery. First appearing in America around the turn of the century, there is some debate as to whether it was invented by Italian luthiers or imported from Mexico. One thing is for sure though, when the twelve string finally caught on, it caught on big.

From Led Zeppelins "Stairway to heaven" to The Eagles' "Hotel California" the twelve string guitar has made its mark on rock-n-roll history. It's unique chorus sound lends a dramatic tone to a song while also giving it that "old world" sound.

The first musician we know of to make regular use of the twelve string was "Blind Willie" McTell. After playing six string guitars, Willie found he preferred the twelve string for its louder volume. Songs such as "Travelin Blues" and "Statesboro Blues" brought Willie's Piedmont sound to the forefront in the 20's and 30's

Twelve string guitars are also widely used in Latino music, and have been since the beginning. One of the early starlets of the Latino music scene, Lydia Mendoza made her mark when she graduate from mandolin to twelve-string and eventually recorded her hit "Mal Hombre" which made her an overnight celebrity.

No discussion of the twelve string would be complete without mentioning Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter who so famously used his twelve string to "sing his way out of prison." The reality is that in both cases Leadbelly had already served almost all of his sentence, but his music also played a role as he was well known for performing in prison for his cellmates and was even recorded for the Library of Congress.

Leadbelly went on to a rich career and penned many of the staple songs of the blues genre. Leadbelly songs like "Goodnight Irene" "Gallis Pole" "Midnight Special" and "The House of the Rising Sun" have been covered by so many artists and have become so ingrained in our culture that most people don't even realize that its a Ledbelly song.

In the 60's and 70's with the rebirth of blues music, the twelve string made a big comeback. Rock artists such as The Who and Led Zeppelin used the same versatility and dramatic sounds of the twelve string to great effect. Folk artists such as Arlo Guthrie, Paul Simon and Neil Young used the melodic chorus to widen their sound and enrich their music.

Twelve string guitars are not that much different from a six string guitar. A twelve string guitar has twelve strings but they are put into six different courses. This is made so when you play a cord, really two are playing at once so the sound is more eccentric and better sound and quality. Although there are still twelve tuners on this crazy guitar.

These guitars come in electric and acoustic, which ever one you prefer. Playing these twelve string guitars are not that much different or harder to play. As long as you already know how to play a six string guitar. If you don’t know how to play a six string guitar, learn how to play one and then it will be a whole lot easier to play the whole twelve strings.

When playing twelve string guitars, the two strings put together are usually played at the same time. If you have the twelve string guitar in front of you, you should definitely tune it first before you play it. There is no sense in playing a guitar that has not been tuned yet. To tune the twelve string, all you have to do is tune it the same way you would tune a six string guitar. To tune a six string you have to tune it like E B G D A E. The lower string are a octave apart however. So that’s the only difference. So if you wanted to tune your twelve string guitar all you have to do is tune it like EE BB GG D octave D A octave A E octave E. Its just about the same except for the chords being paired up in twos right?

Once you are done tuning your twelve string guitar, you are ready to get out there and play it. Hold it just like a six string, adjust your hands on it just like a six string, and finally, play it just like a six string. All you have to do is just play the two strings paired up together as one chord. You are ready to rock on!

How To Tune a 12 String Guitar

Tuning a 12 string guitar is a simple matter once you learn how. At first those 6 extra tuning pegs can seem intimidating. If you know how to tune a 6 string then you're already half way there. Both instruments are usually tuned to the same E tuning. The only difference is that the 12 string has pairs of same note strings instead of 6 single ones. Some string pairs are tuned to the same note while others are in different octaves.

How To Tune a 12 String Guitar

The first thing you'll need is a reference note to tune your instrument to. Pitch pipes and tuning forks are good cheap options. There is also a variety of electronic tuners that are especially helpful for acoustic-electric 12 strings. You can find a number of websites that also give you a reference tone to tune your guitar to.

Once you have your pitch to tune to, you can go about this in one of two ways. You can tune each string to a reference note, or tune the low E string and tune the rest to it. You can tune a guitar to itself once you have the low E in tune by holding that string down on the 5th fret and tuning the next open string to it. Every note played on the 5th fret should be the note of the next open string going down. The only exception is the G string which is the 4th one down while holding the guitar in playing position. You'll need to hold the note at the 4th fret to tune the next open string which is B, then go back to the 5th fret for the next string. When you hold your guitar in playing position the thickest gauge string at the top is the low E. Going down from there and working your way to the thinnest string, the notes are A, D, G, B, and the high E.

On a 12 string guitar these are tuned the same but in pairs. The low E's are an octave apart with the lighter gauge string being the higher octave. A strings gauge is it's thickness, so when I refer to a lighter gauge it means the thinner string. Follow this same pattern for the A,D, and G string pairs. The E and B notes are tuned in unison and then you're all done and ready to play.

Twelve-string guitars can be electric or acoustic with twelve strings in six courses. These have a richer tone than your standard six-string guitar. They have a natural chorus effect in part because of differences in tone produced by the sets of two strings on each course.

Six and twelve-string guitars both have pros and cons and deciding which to get can be a big decision. The guitar you do end up buying should depend on what you are going to do with the guitar and how much money you can spend. Twelve string guitars, as we have said produce a richer, brighter sound. This is because they have twice the number of strings than your usual guitar. If the songs you are usually playing are mainly chords then a twelve string might be a good option. A six-string is better for a beginner as it is easier to learn. A twelve-string guitar costs about $100 to $200 more than a six string.

The design of a twelve-string guitar is not very different from a six-string guitar except that it has twice the number of strings. The strings are placed in courses (sets) of two strings that are played together. There is a great amount of tension placed on the body of the guitar by the strings and because of this; they have a reputation for warping. Some twelve strings do have structural supports to prevent or at least postpone this. There usually is an effect on appearance and tone though.

It is much harder to pluck individual strings on a twelve-string guitar. The gap between the dual-string courses is narrower than on a six string. The fact that the thin octave strings paired with larger stiffer bass strings presents difficulties to the player too. It also makes the strings more prone to breakage. Only very skilled players can consistently pluck single strings on a twelve-string guitar. With practice, though the twelve-string is not overly difficult to play. As stated before they come in acoustic and electric, with the acoustic type being more common.

Very few musicians use the twelve-string as their primary guitar. They use them for the occasions that the song they are playing needs a big, bright rhythm sound. If the songs you plan to play feature a lot of chords then a twelve string might be a good investment even if you are a beginner. They are harder to play as we have said before but it is very doable and worthwhile.
